In August, a group of 21 current and former students from The Rochester Grammar School completed their Gold DofE qualifying expedition in Dartmoor. This was the second expedition run by the Medway Open Award Centre, they had completed in the summer, as they had already visited the Peak District at the end of July. As most of the group had completed their Silver awards previously, they were well prepared for the challenges that lay ahead. Dartmoor is the ideal place for this expedition as you walk from one side of the moor to the other without ever meeting a fence. The 4 groups of students had each planned their own expedition, which involved walking for 4 days on the moor, wild camping for 3 nights and cooking at least once per day. None of the groups had an easy time but the bad memories of blisters, tears and foxes started to fade when we celebrated their achievement on the last evening. We are now looking forward to next summer’s expeditions.
