Key Stage 3 & 4 PSHE

Curriculum Overview Key Stage 3 & 4

All students in Years 7 to 11, will have one PSHE lesson per fortnight, with the PSHE curriculum using a thematic spiral approach, in line with recommendations from the PSHE Association. This will be delivered by the House form tutor team and students will be in House year groups for PSHE lessons. Students will build on the knowledge and understanding they have acquired and developed at primary school through a sequenced, age appropriate lessons.

Through PSHE lessons, students will acknowledge and address the changes that young people experience along with the challenges of adolescence and their increasing independence. They will develop the knowledge and skills required in order to approach the future opportunities and challenges of life. Students learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media.

At Key Stage 4, students deepen knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during Key Stage 3. PSHE education reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.

Assessment

Although PSHE is not an externally assessed subject, it is important for PSHE teachers to assess students’ understanding in order to ensure they are well equipped to deal with the issues they will face in their day to day lives. Teachers assess understanding through questioning and observation during core discussions.

Home learning is set throughout the unit and will be self or peer assessed, depending on the nature of the topic. There will also be a quiz set at the end of the unit which will be marked by staff. This will allow staff to ensure students have gained a solid understanding of the topics students have covered and provide students with the opportunity to reflect on their progress in the unit.

Parents’ right to withdraw

Requests for withdrawal should be put in writing to the Headteacher by downloading the form below and returning to the school.
